It is easy to view, modify or cancel your reservation. You can do so via this link or on the Budget app.

IMPORTANT: If you have pre-paid your booking a cancellation fee will apply. Please see Is there a cancellation fee? for details.

There is no need to reconfirm your Budget reservation. However you can view, modify or cancel your upcoming reservation online here.

If you have booked with a third party and haven't received a confirmation, please contact them directly. 

A Budget Customer Discount (BCD) Number is a unique number assigned to a Budget account or program that identifies eligibility for contracted features, rates and or a percentage discount off a rate.

If you're a member of an organisation or company that partners with Budget you may have access to a corporate BCD. Please check with your organisation or Account Manager for details.

Enter your BCD in the Discount Code section of the search form. We'll use this BCD number to calculate your rental rate and benefits.

Simply enter the coupon number under the Discount Code section of the booking form.

If you’re booking directly from an offer page, the coupon code should be included automatically.

At selected locations and for selected dates and times, you have the option to Pay Now, where you pay for your rental at the time of booking to receive a discount on the daily base rate.

Special conditions and cancellation fees apply to Pay Now bookings.

It is a condition of rental that at time of pick-up, the renter must present a physical Credit Card or Debit Card. See accepted cards and payment methods below.

  • We accept the following Credit Cards: Visa, MasterCard and American Express.
  • We accept the following Debit Cards: Visa and MasterCard ONLY.
  • We do not accept a prepaid or reloadable stored value card, a travel money card or an EFTPOS card. Please note: some locations may accept a prepaid or reloadable stored value card as a final form of payment at the end of the rental – you are advised to enquire with the locations directly.
  • We do not accept electronic payments with phones or contactless tap-and-go payment types.
  • When paying by credit card or debit card a transaction fee of 2.53% for MasterCard and Visa, and 3.57% for American Express including GST will apply on all charges at time of payment.

When you start your rental, a pre-authorisation hold will be placed on your credit or debit card for the duration of the rental. Please see What is the pre-authorisation for Budget vehicles? under Requirements For Renting for information regarding pre-authorisation hold amounts which will be placed on your card for the duration of your rental.

Yes. We accept Visa and MasterCard debit cards. These cards must show the customer's name, signature and card number, with the applicable logo. Prepaid and reloadable debit cards and gift cards, as well as travel cards and EFTPOS cards are not accepted.

When paying with a credit or debit card, a Card Transaction Fee will apply. This is a processing fee that is charged by the card issuer to Budget.

A fee of 2.2% for MasterCard and Visa and 3.1% for American Express, applies to the total rental charges including GST, where a credit or debit card is used for payment. The card transaction fee is subject to GST.

Unexpected changes can happen, so at Budget, if your reservation has not been pre-paid, generally no cancellation fee will apply.

If you have pre-paid your booking a cancellation fee applies:

  • If you cancel at least 24 hours prior to your scheduled pick-up time, there is a $86.25 (inc. GST) cancellation fee.  
  • If you cancel within 24 hours prior to the scheduled pick-up time, there is a $172.50 (inc. GST) cancellation fee.
  • If you fail to cancel your reservation prior to the pick-up time and do not collect the vehicle on the pick-up date, the entire pre-paid amount will be forfeited.   
  • If the value of your reservation is less than the cancellation fee, you will not be charged any further amount and will not be entitled to any refund.

Generally all Budget rentals include unlimited kilometres, unless otherwise indicated at the time of booking.

If you are booking a particular vehicle or rate which has limited kilometres you will be advised the kilometre allowance included per day and the cost of additional kilometres. Road User Charges apply to Budget Truck vehicles.

Yes, you can take your rental car inter-island across Cook Strait.

It is the customer’s responsibility to book vehicle and passenger ferry tickets and we recommend that you book your ferry crossing at your earliest convenience to secure your desired crossing date

There are select Budget locations that have a key drop box and allow returns outside of business hours. Please check at time of booking, view the location information, or contact the return location to check if this is possible.

There are select Budget locations that offer vehicle delivery. Please view the location information, or contact the pick-up location to check if this is possible.

Additional charges will apply if you return your vehicle at a later date or time. You can extend your rental online or contact the pickup location. You'll find the phone number on your Rental Agreement or you can search for your pickup location.

Only those people whose names are recorded on the Rental Agreement may drive a Budget vehicle. Please proceed to the nearest branch to register an additional driver on your agreement. For more information on additional drivers including any applicable charges please click here.
